Developed by Lockheed Aircraft Corporation the P-38 was designed to meet the demands of the US Army Air Corps for a high-performance interceptor that could operate at high altitudes. One of the most famous P-38J Lightnings was flown by Major Thomas McGuire who served in the 431st Fighter Squadron of the 475th Fighter Group 5th Air Force in 1944. McGuires P-38J was known for its distinctive nose art featuring a cartoon of the comic strip character "Little Joe".McGuire flew his P-38J in a number of critical missions during the Pacific Theater of Operations including the Battle of the Bismarck Sea where he earned the Medal of Honor for his bravery in shooting down several enemy aircraft. He continued to fly his P-38J in combat until his death in January 1945 when he was shot down over the Philippines.The P-38J Lightning was a formidable aircraft that played a critical role in the air war over the Pacific. It was known for its speed range and firepower making it a favorite of pilots li.
