The different pieces are designed to capture the essence of the medieval period representing the king, his queen, church bishops, armored horses for knight, a castle tower for the rook, and medieval soldiers for the pawns. Each pieces is hand painted highlighting specific features in the design while leaving the rest of piece in its natural color. The king is 3.625" tall and has a base diameter of 1.25". The pieces are solid cast zinc formed by the old-world lost-wax casting process and are brass and nickel plated. The pieces are lacquered to prevent them from ever tarnishing and have red felt pads embossed with the Italfama logo.
