This beautiful chess set includes our Vienna Coffee House antique reproduction chess pieces matched with our Elm Burl and Erable Chess Board and Classic Elm Burl Chess Box. The Vienna Coffee House is elegant and has a unique design based on the sets produced in the early 1900's in Austria. There were many iterations of the basic design and our approach was to take the best elements from the most attractive models and create a chess set that had the best of everything. Our chess pieces are more refined and much higher quality than would have been available with the original sets. This is large set with a tall king and a base diameter of 1.7". The knights are wonderfully carved with handsome features and fine detail. These pieces are made from ebonized and natural boxwood and have a glass-like lacquered finish just like our Black & Ash Burl chess board.Our Elm Burl and Erable Chess Board is made for us by Italfama in Italy, the leading chess manufacturer in Europe. Elm burl is one of the most beautiful burl woods in the world with a wide range of brown-orange colors and unique burl wood patterns. The erable is whitened bird's-eye maple and looks and creates a striking contrast with the rich colors of the elm burl. This is an inlaid chess board made from the finest quality elm burl and erable veneer and sealed with a matte polyurethane finish to protect and enhance the beauty of the wood. The precise inlay work by the craftsmen is remarkable. The chess board has 2.125" squares accentuated by a black inlay delimiter and surrounded by an extra wide frame. The overall size of the board is 21.75" and is .625" thick. The chess box is wonderfully constructed and reminiscent of the old heirloom quality chess boxes from many years ago. The box is covered in elm burl veneer and the interior is lined with a thick green baize just like we use for the pads on our chess pieces. The box has a divider in the center for storing the black and white pieces separately. We used high quality recessed hinges and a brass plated lock for securing the lid. We include 2 keys in case one ever gets lost.
