Our Old English Classic is the epitome of a traditional Staunton chess set in every respect. This classic design captures the key elements of old Jaques patterns from back in the 1800s, from king to pawn. These are golden rosewood and boxwood pieces with a traditional polished lacquer finish. The king is tall and has a 1.7" diameter base. The pieces are heavily weighted for exceptional balance and stability on the chess board. Green billiard cloth pads on the bottom allow the pieces to easily slide across the chess board and have a quiet and soft feel when sitting down. We include two extra queens for pawn promotion and a certificate of authenticity so you will always know what the chess set is and where it came from. The squares are surrounded with a wide black delimiter and a black border on the outside accentuates the bird's-eye maple frame. A semi-gloss polyurethane finish both protects and enhances the color of the wood. The squares are 2.125" with an overall footprint of 21.5".Our Bird's-Eye Maple Classic Chess Box is wonderfully constructed and reminiscent of the old heirloom quality chess boxes from years ago. The box is covered in beautiful bird's-eye maple veneer that perfectly matches the chess board squares and frame with a lustrous semi-gloss polyurethane finish. The interior is lined with a thick emerald-green baize just like we use for the pads on our chess pieces. The box has a divider in the center for conveniently storing the black and white pieces separately. We use high quality brass plated quadrant hinges that neatly recess into the wall of the box and a brass plated lock and key for securing the lid when closed.
