To create the black color the boxwood chess pieces are actually burnt followed by the final carving and design work which creates a beautiful contrast in colors between the blackened areas and the natural golden wood colors underneath. The pieces are sealed in a high-gloss polyurethane finish that gives them an elegant glass like appearance. The king is tall and has a base diameter of 1.625" - an ideal tournament size set. The pieces are heavily weighted and have thick green baize pads for a soft feel on the chess board.
